Glensanda Harbour is part of Holcim’s Glensanda coastal super-quarry north of Oban, Argyll and Bute, as there is no road access, the 200 employees are supported by a fleet of passenger and supply vessels.
As the largest granite quarry in Europe, Glensanda produces up to 7 million tonnes of granite aggregate and armourstone annually. They recently celebrated shipping their 200 millionth tonne.
Following the 2025 update to the Ports & Marine Facilities Safety Code (PMSC), harbour owner and operator Holcim UK Limited sought to understand how the role of the Duty Holder – accountable for safe marine operations – had changed under the new Code.
Having recently aligned Glensanda Harbour’s Marine Safety Management System to the updated PMSC, ABPmer was commissioned to deliver a one-day Duty Holder training course to key members of the Glensanda Harbour Board and Officers.
Our specialists covered the purpose of the PMSC and the role of the Duty Holder in ensuring compliance, as well as the duties, powers and responsibilities of the Duty Holder under the Code, including legal obligations.
The training included a comprehensive overview of the new PMSC and accompanying guide to good practice, a review of the PMSC ‘Health Check’ compliance audits undertaken by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), and analysis of the recent adverse trends published in the Agency’s PMSC ‘Health Check Findings’ report.
